Nebraska Legends Program Grows


The NAA is excited to announce that 142 incoming freshmen will be part of the Nebraska Legends Scholarship Program during the 2012-2013 academic year. The program has nearly doubled in size since last year’s pilot class of 80 freshmen, and we invite all alumni and fans to contribute to the future growth of this effort to recruit top students to Lincoln. Every scholarship awarded is matched by the UNL Chancellor’s Office, so your gift goes farther. Once at UNL, the scholarship recipients meet regularly with an adviser and receive invitations to social and academic events, building the foundation for their lifelong connection to the university. Nebraska Legends is a cooperative effort between the NAA, the UNL Office of Admissions and the University of Nebraska Foundation. To see a video, read more or give to the program, click here.

Four Students Named Goldwater Scholars

UNL was one of only four universities in the country to have four students receive prestigious Goldwater Scholarships. The scholarships are awarded annually to future scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Winners are: Rachel Coburn of Papillion, Elizabeth Spring Jaensch of Naperville, Ill., Jared Paul Ostdiek of Columbus and Joseph Phillips of Omaha. All are majoring in the biological sciences. This was a record number of scholarships for UNL in the annual competition. To read more about the student winners, click here.

82 Husker Student-Athletes Earn Degrees

Courtney Osborne, a football player and Ethnic Studies major from Garland, Texas, drew laughs at Nebraska’s 2012 Student-Athlete Graduation Reception when he said his Nebraska experiences included learning how to shovel ice, how to see if a heifer is pregnant and why 25 minutes of sleep now equals an hour. “I want to thank the 3 F’s, and I don’t mean grades … I mean family, friends and faculty, as well as the University of Nebraska.”  Osborne was among the 82 student athletes who received their bachelor’s degrees from UNL during commencement exercises this month. Help UNL Alumni Reach 10,000 Fans

NU President Milliken requests millions from NE cash reserve

University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken announced his “Building a Healthier Nebraska” initiative to the Nebraska Legislature Jan. 18.

This proposal requests $91 million from Nebraska’s cash reserve fund for projects in Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney. An additional $300 million will come from private donors, patient revenues and other sources, according to a UNL press release on Jan. 18. .. Read More

Huskers Second in Big Ten Recycling Challenge

Lincoln, Neb., Jan. 13, 2012 — After the mountains of waste were measured and reported, the Huskers finished second in the Big Ten Conference in two key categories of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Game Day Challenge 2011, with 6,880 pounds of waste recycled.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has hovered in the upper 60s on Kiplinger’sBest Values in Public Colleges ranking for at least three years, and this year is no different.

Displaced Husker in the Desert pays up!

As you may know, everyone I work with knows my loyalty to Our University. Our new conference generated a lot of excitement this season and I was as confident as ever. Unfortunately, I lost a bet to a gal who’s just as loyal to her school.
I had to wear their school colors to work, and I thought yesterday was as good as any, especially with their great bowl win Tuesday night. It started at my breakfast club who simply laughed out loud! The good news, I did not break out in a rash.
I had to provide proof that I carried out my end of the deal. Everyone was impressed with me that I actually did it. Me too.
