Husker Newcomers Score Victories Off-the-Field
Twenty-two new Husker football student-athletes notched their first career win at Nebraska with a superb effort at both the Belmont and Calvert Community Centers. During football newcomer orientation, Tuesday, August 7th the topic of emphasis was “Community Service Engagement.”
Life Skills Coordinator Jessie Gardner and Life Skills Assistant Chris Phipps reviewed outreach opportunities, provided tips, outlined expectations and showed DVD’s of Huskers in the community. Over the years, Nebraska has developed a reputation as national leaders in community service and outreach being recognized by both the NCAA and the National Consortium for Academics and Sport for innovative and comprehensive outreach efforts. Husker football players lead the nation in the number of selections to the AFCA Good Works Team with Jared Crick claiming the honor in 2011 and Rex Burkhead being Nebraska’s 2012 nominee.
The Husker newcomers proudly sported their Husker football jerseys and departed in campus shuttles to either Belmont or Calvert. HuskerVision crews and photographers joined each group and local media covered the outreach events, confirming to the student-athletes that all activities associated with Nebraska Athletics come under scrutiny and a watchful eye. The student-athletes spent approximately one hour at their respective community center introducing themselves to the children, answering questions, playing a variety of games, handing out wrist bracelets, signing autographs and providing both encouragement and inspiration. Shara Ryba of the Calvert Community Center raved about the interaction. “Our staff and kids had a fantastic time with the football players. They were great ambassadors and we would welcome them back anytime.” Karen French from the Belmont Community Center was likewise impressed. “They were great with the kids and so personable. Some really neat guys who made a lasting impression. We hope you make this an annual event,” concluded French.
Husker running back Imani Cross enjoyed the outreach outing and like his teammates is eager to make an even bigger impact. “This was a blast. Some really great kids and fans. The support of this community is just amazing and I am so fortunate to be a Nebraska football player.” Teammate Michael Rose, at the end of the event, like Cross, was already exploring additional opportunities for involvement. “Today felt good and I can’t wait to do more of this throughout my career.” Thanks again to the staff at Calvert and Belmont Community Recreation Centers for hosting newcomer football outreach and congratulations to 22 Huskers who made a memorable impression during their season opener scoring a landslide victory!

ALUMNI NEWS
Nebraska Legends Program Grows
The NAA is excited to announce that 142 incoming freshmen will be part of the Nebraska Legends Scholarship Program during the 2012-2013 academic year. The program has nearly doubled in size since last year’s pilot class of 80 freshmen, and we invite all alumni and fans to contribute to the future growth of this effort to recruit top students to Lincoln. Every scholarship awarded is matched by the UNL Chancellor’s Office, so your gift goes farther. Once at UNL, the scholarship recipients meet regularly with an adviser and receive invitations to social and academic events, building the foundation for their lifelong connection to the university. Nebraska Legends is a cooperative effort between the NAA, the UNL Office of Admissions and the University of Nebraska Foundation. To see a video, read more or give to the program, click here.

82 Husker Student-Athletes Earn Degrees
Courtney Osborne, a football player and Ethnic Studies major from Garland, Texas, drew laughs at Nebraska’s 2012 Student-Athlete Graduation Reception when he said his Nebraska experiences included learning how to shovel ice, how to see if a heifer is pregnant and why 25 minutes of sleep now equals an hour. “I want to thank the 3 F’s, and I don’t mean grades … I mean family, friends and faculty, as well as the University of Nebraska.” Osborne was among the 82 student athletes who received their bachelor’s degrees from UNL during commencement exercises this month.
